148Apps: Scrabble Update: Notifications? Um, sure.

    I've got a question, a few actually.

I believe this lets you play over WiFi, but do they have to be in the same network?
or can they be anywhere on the internet?

Does playing EA's Scrabble have anything to do with the Facebook scrabble?

    Thanks,

Yes, you have to be on the same WiFi network.

For remote multiplayer over the the internet, you have to use Facebook. EA's Scrabble's online portion IS Facebook Scrabble; if you want to play friends on the internet, just pick them from your friend's list.

    Hope that helps!

So if I had two friends with iPhones (somewhere else in the world) connect to the same scrabble game on Facebook (with the EA application) wouldn't we all be playing the same game? Or doesn't it work that way, I've never actually played on Facebook.

I've now purchased Scrabble. It connects to Facebook just fine. So as long as you both have a Facebook account, you could play Scrabble from anywhere in the world (via WiFi or 3g).

Now if they'd just fix the push notifications (or add text paging or even e-mail) for when it's my turn!!!

Ah, and I thought for the longest time that it was just me. Then again, after seeing Your screenshot, where it says that, even in case it did work, which it doesn't, it would require a Facebook account which I don't have (no data sellout for me, thank You!), I think I don''t care after all. Considering that Scrabble is available for so many mobile platforms, why can't EA offer a dedicated server to play against friends? I don't want to have to register with a 3rd party service in order to play online, that sucks!

But, like You said, it doesn't work anyway, so... :-)

Oh, and Gary, I'm pretty sure You have to be on the same network, as is the case for all iPhone games offering multiplayer via WiFi.

I assumed so for the WiFi games, but something as slow as Scrabble, especially if it is connecting to Facebook for the game seems like it wouldn't matter :(

    Too bad...

    Thanks!

You can always make a "fake" (i.e., completely empty) Facebook account just for games. (I use this, sometimes.) Facebook Connect is easier than remembering different usernames/passwords for all of your different apps, but if you don't use Facebook, it can be a pain. For better or for worse, though, Facebook Connect is quickly becoming standard.

I'm just happy to have online Scrabble during class. :)

Hmm, interesting idea, I never considered that. On the other hand, should I then at some point decide to use Facebook for real, say when they bought Google and finally dominate the world ;-) , I would be stuck with a fake account unless I restart all over again.

Well, maybe I'll take a look, I certainly have seen my fair share of games offering said Facebook Connect feature. So, thanks for the tip!

Some of the anger is also coming from cuts in options in other realms of the app. In this update, Pass and Play is gone. Also, in the quick play setting, the HARD setting has become laughably easy, on par with the NORMAL setting before the "update." Shame on EA, right? This was a downgrade!

That's strange--I still have Pass and Play in my app. But you're definitely right about the difficulty settings. I wonder what EA was thinking--why "fix" something that wasn't broken? I swear, they have the *ability* to make great products, but sometimes they really screw up the execution.

They added PUSH notifications for Scrabble! They showed up in the new version yesterday.

Works good with Facebook so far. Only sound and badge notifications, no text alerts :(
